Trump Claims India to Cut Russian Oil Imports Amid Ongoing Ukraine War Pressure

Trump Says Modi Plans to Slash Russian Oil Imports

US President Donald Trump has once again asserted that India will significantly reduce its purchase of Russian crude oil — a claim that has stirred both curiosity and skepticism in diplomatic circles.

Speaking during Diwali celebrations at the White House, Trump revealed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him in a phone call that India “won’t be buying much oil from Russia” and supports efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.

While Modi publicly acknowledged the call and sent Diwali greetings to Trump via social media, he made no mention of oil imports or the ongoing conflict.

India Silent, Questions Arise Over Trump’s Claim

This isn’t the first time Trump has made such a statement. Last week, he said the same, prompting India’s foreign ministry to clarify that it was “not aware” of any phone call between the two leaders.
Officials have once again declined to comment on Trump’s renewed remarks, leaving uncertainty about whether any such agreement truly exists.

The Background: India’s Role in Russian Energy Trade

Since the Ukraine war began in 2022, India has become one of the top buyers of discounted Russian oil — a move it defends as essential for ensuring affordable energy for its massive population.
Western countries, including the US, have accused India of indirectly funding Russia’s war efforts through oil purchases, a charge New Delhi strongly denies.

In response, Washington has imposed steep tariffs — up to 50% on Indian goods — as part of its broader strategy to economically isolate Moscow. However, recent diplomatic talks between the two nations suggest that tensions might be easing.

Trade Negotiations Hint at a Possible Compromise

Sources cited by India’s Mint newspaper say a potential trade deal could soon be announced. Under the agreement, India may agree to gradually scale back Russian oil imports while boosting energy cooperation with the US.
This signals a possible middle ground — one that allows India to protect its energy interests while improving its trade relationship with Washington.

Do you think India should reduce its Russian oil imports to strengthen ties with the US — or continue prioritizing its own energy needs?
