| 🌍 Venezuela Gives Airlines 48 Hours to Resume Flights Amid Rising US Tensions |
Multiple major carriers halted flights after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a security alert on Friday, citing “heightened military activity” around Venezuelan airspace.
The suspension came just as the US increased its military presence in the southern Caribbean, deploying the world’s largest aircraft carrier as part of a wider operation.
⚠️ Airlines Pull Back After US Security Warning
Airlines including Iberia, Air Europa, Plus Ultra, Gol, Latam, Avianca, TAP Portugal, and Turkish Airlines suspended operations following the FAA advisory.
The alert urged caution for all flights operating in the Maiquetía Flight Information Region, home to the capital’s international airport.
Although carriers like Copa Airlines and Venezuela’s Conviasa continue to operate, the overall number of flights has dropped sharply, further isolating the country.
🌐 Aviation Industry Warns of Growing Isolation
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged Venezuela to withdraw the ultimatum, warning that revoking airline clearances would leave Venezuela even more disconnected from the region.
IATA emphasized that airlines paused flights temporarily for safety reasons, stressing they intend to return once conditions stabilize.
🔥 US–Venezuela Tensions Escalate
Relations between Washington and Caracas have deteriorated rapidly since the US expanded its military presence near Venezuelan waters, officially to counter drug trafficking operations.
The US Navy has reportedly carried out more than 21 strikes against suspected drug vessels since early September.
President Nicolás Maduro accused the US of attempting to destabilize or overthrow his government, declaring on national TV:
“They will not defeat Venezuela — we are invincible.”
🤝 Diplomacy Still on the Table
Despite labeling Maduro’s 2024 re-election as illegitimate, the US has not closed the door on direct talks. President Donald Trump said last week he is open to speaking with Maduro “at the right time.”
