Hamas Warns Gaza Ceasefire at Risk After Israel Kills Senior Commander

Ceasefire Under Strain After High-Profile Killing

Hamas has warned that the fragile ceasefire in Gaza is in serious danger following Israel’s killing of a senior Hamas military commander, raising fears that months of relative calm could unravel.

Speaking in a televised address, Hamas’s chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya said the assassination represents a major violation of the truce and could threaten its survival if it continues unchecked.

Mass Funeral Signals Hamas’ Continued Presence

Thousands of Hamas supporters gathered in central Gaza City to attend the funeral of Raed Saed, a senior commander killed alongside three associates. The coffins, draped in green Hamas flags, were carried through the streets as mourners chanted religious slogans.

The gathering marked one of the largest public displays by Hamas since the U.S.-backed ceasefire came into effect in October, underscoring the group’s continued influence in parts of Gaza.

Hamas Appeals to the United States

Al-Hayya called on international mediators — particularly the United States and President Donald Trump — to pressure Israel into respecting the ceasefire agreement.

According to Hamas, continued Israeli military actions and targeted killings undermine trust and risk returning Gaza to full-scale conflict.

Israel and Hamas Trade Blame

Israel has described Saed as a senior architect of the October 7, 2023 attack that triggered the war. Hamas sources, meanwhile, portrayed him as a key figure in military manufacturing and confirmed that a replacement has already been appointed.

The group insisted the killing would not alter its long-term strategy or weaken its armed wing.

Gaza Divided on the Ground

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces still control much of eastern Gaza, now largely depopulated, while Hamas has reasserted authority in the western areas where most civilians remain.

Both sides remain deeply divided over the next phase of the agreement. Israel demands Hamas disarm and step aside from any future governance, while Hamas rejects disarmament and calls for a full Israeli withdrawal.

International Stabilization Force in Focus

The ceasefire framework includes plans for a UN-approved International Stabilization Force to help maintain peace. Hamas has said such forces should remain at Gaza’s borders, not operate inside the territory.

U.S. Central Command is expected to host talks in Doha on December 16 to discuss the deployment with international partners.

Internal Violence Adds New Tensions

In a separate incident, a senior Hamas internal security officer was shot dead in central Gaza. Hamas accused Israeli-backed collaborators, while an anti-Hamas group claimed responsibility, highlighting growing internal divisions amid the fragile truce.

Why This Matters Globally

The killing has intensified fears that Gaza’s ceasefire could collapse, potentially reigniting a conflict with regional and international consequences. With diplomacy under pressure, the coming days may determine whether calm holds or fighting resumes.

Do you think the Gaza ceasefire can survive targeted killings, or is a return to full-scale conflict now inevitable?
