Hero NYPD Officer Killed Saving Lives in Manhattan Skyscraper Shooting

A tragic shooting at a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan has left four dead, including a brave NYPD officer who gave his life protecting others.

Officer Didarul Islam, 36, a father of two with a third child on the way, was fatally shot while on security duty at the Park Avenue skyscraper. Originally from Bangladesh, Islam joined the NYPD after years of serving his community in other roles, including school security and mentorship for young men at his local mosque.

Authorities say the attacker, Shane Tamura, 27, from Nevada, had a known mental health history and no clear motive. He began his assault by killing Officer Islam in the building's lobby before taking the lives of three civilians and then himself on the 33rd floor.

New York Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch hailed Islam as a hero. "He gave everything to protect this city," said Adams, who personally visited Islam's grieving family. “He lived – and died – as a true New Yorker.”

Islam’s loss has deeply impacted the Bronx’s Bangladeshi community, where he was a role model and family man striving to build a proud legacy.

“He chose to serve despite the risks,” said one of his mentees. “He wanted to give his children something to be proud of.”
